Death and Life of the Great Brač Quarries

About project
This space is found in absence—it rests on absence. So burdened, it became free only once forgotten. The cliffs and clearings of Brač’s quarries bear witness to the island’s proud history. Rather than naively concealing the scars of mining, the solution to the ignored restoration problem seeks to recognize the value of this void. A carefully crafted architectural framework reawakens life in a forgotten space. Perhaps architecture can reclaim this space for the islanders. The melodramatic 'wound in nature' becomes an irresistible opportunity for a new and exciting narrative.
