Exhibition
The central theme of the 59th Zagreb Salon of Architecture and Urbanism is reuse, or the reutilization of already constructed structures and environments for the same, similar, or entirely new purpose. All selected and exhibited works—whether conceptual, design-based, or realized—are presented through models, ranging from working prototypes to highly sophisticated representations. The Salon's selection provides an overview of relevant architectural themes in Croatia, where two temporally distant and often opposing spatial discourses become an inseparable whole that generates new value. Unlike the previous Salon, which presented projects virtually, our approach emphasizes the observable and tactile experience of physical models.
Reuse breathes new life into historical structures, where contemporary interventions, regardless of their intensity or visibility, together with the existing elements lay the foundation for a new architectural paradigm. This duality—old and new—whether it establishes dialogue or monologue, balance or imbalance, or even maintains the status quo, paves a new, sometimes unpredictable path in exploring the Salon’s overarching theme. The most successful works have been awarded and recognized, valuing their contribution to the conceptual approach to the theme of reuse.
A significant portion of the selected works are student projects, which, in a manner characteristic of those just entering the professional world of architecture, freshly and radically expand horizons within the framework of the Salon's theme. Meanwhile, the selected publicist works establish or question the theoretical framework regarding the intensity and methods of intervention into historical fabric.
The Salon awards special recognition to student works that, with powerful gestures, remind us anew of the power of architecture and the inexhaustible limits of its expressive potential.
